New Items from 5th Fall Message

1) September 27 Plan

a) Doors open at two, rehearsal starts at 2:30.

b) New members will have a brief introduction, led by Len, at 2:15.

c) Those having requested pre-printed repertoire will receive it upon arrival and check in (Kerry and Carol Ann will be welcoming you). Bring a binder for your music.

d) Music that Katy will focus on for this rehearsal:

i) Bridge Over Troubled Water

ii) I Am a Voice That Sings

iii) Lean on Me

iv) Midwintersong

v) We Rise Again

e) Katy will review (on Jennifer’s behalf) the rehearsal tools available on the website.

f) Bring a water bottle.

g) Wear a name-tag; it makes saying hello easier.

h) We take a brief break ½ way through. Alto voices will call us back from the break by singing We shall overcome (acapella?).

2) From Katy

a) I hope you've had a great week, as we pass the equinox!

b) This week in my series about each of our songs, I'd like to tell you about We Rise Again.

i) Leon Dubinsky wrote the song in 1984 for a musical called "The Rise and Follies of Cape Breton." He said that it is a song about "the cycles of immigration, the economic insecurity of living in Cape Breton, the power of the ocean, the meaning of children, and the strength of home given to us by our families, our friends and our music."

ii) The Rankin Family released it in 1993 on their third studio album, and they received an East Coast Music Award in 1994 for Best Song. It was later also recorded by Anne Murray and Rita MacNeil.

iii) This choral version was arranged by Canadian conductor Lydia Adams, and has helped this song reach even more people around the world. It is considered the unofficial anthem of Cape Breton, and is the official song of Cape Breton University.

3) Potluck

a) Potluck is October 18. We will discuss more at rehearsal. Organizing team is led by Debbie Woodfine.
